    The Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday launched a new Community Advisory Group (CAG), composed of leaders of nonprofit and community organizations from across the Federal Reserve’s Second District.

    CAG members will provide the New York Fed a “real-time view of the issues faced by a diverse set of communities across the Second District,” it said in a news release.

  • Binghamton University professor wins $500,000 NSF grant to continue skin research

    VESTAL, N.Y. — A Binghamton University professor will use a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue his research into skin.

    Guy German, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, will use the five-year, NSF early career development (CAREER) grant for his research that focuses “almost exclusively” on the body’s largest organ.

  • New York manufacturing index declines in April

    The Empire State Manufacturing Survey general business-conditions index fell 11 points to 5.2 in April, its second straight monthly decline.

    The index also fell two points in March after climbing 12 points in February to its highest level in more than two years.

    However, April’s 5.2 figure is the survey’s sixth consecutive positive reading. A positive index level indicates expansion or growth in manufacturing activity, while a negative index reading indicates a decline in the sector.

  • State fines Excellus $1 million for denying customers’ contraceptive coverage

    The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) has fined Excellus Health Plans, Inc. $1 million for “wrongly” denying contraceptive coverage.

    A DFS investigation found that the health insurer wrongly denied contraceptive coverage to customers due to internal system and process errors, failed to promptly pay or deny claims, and failed to acknowledge or resolve consumer grievances within time frames required by law.

  • Schumer warns about proposed federal budget cut’s impact on North Country air service

    DEXTER, N.Y. — U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) says he’s worried about the proposed elimination of a federal program subsidizing air service in Northern New York communities.

    The Democrat indicated the Trump Administration’s proposed fiscal year 2018 federal budget would eliminate the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, which provides funding for small, rural airports nationwide.

    They include airports serving Watertown in Jefferson County and Ogdensburg and Massena in St. Lawrence County, according to a news release Schumer’s office issued Friday.
