Area unemployment rates drop

Local unemployment rates fell in August, but are still as much as a percent higher than they were a year ago, according to figures released by the state Department of Labor.

	SYRACUSE — Construction has started at Le Moyne College to renovate the school’s Mitchell Hall to house the Madden School of Business. The school held a short ceremony Thursday to mark the beginning of the construction period.

	ConMed declares quarterly dividend of 15 cents a share by Adam Rombel
	UTICA — ConMed Corp.’s (NASDAQ: CNMD) board of directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of 15 cents per share, payable on July 8 to all shareholders of record as of June 17. At its current stock price, that equals an annual dividend yield of about 1.8 percent.

	New York initial unemployment claims rise by Adam Rombel
	In New York state, 19,122 people filed for new unemployment-insurance benefits in the week ending May 11, up from the year-to-date low of 18,627 claims filed the week before, according to U.S. Labor Department data issued Thursday.

	March jobs report fails to impress
	U.S. employers added 88,000 jobs to their payrolls in March, far short of economists' expectations of 200,000 jobs, according to the latest monthly report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate fell to 7.6 percent from 7.7 percent, but that was only because nearly 500,000 stopped looking for work in March.
