The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today awarded funding to Cornell University and Binghamton University for energy-storage projects.
The funding is part of $8 million NYSERDA awarded for 19 projects around the state. The projects could have applications in transportation, smart grids, renewable energy, and other areas, according to NYSERDA.

The more than 400 physician practices in Onondaga County drove $1 billion into the county's economy in 2008 through the employment of nearly 6,000 physicians and staff members.

That's according to a new report on private-practice physicians in New York. The Onondaga County Medical Society released details about the study on Monday.

NATS Services in the United Kingdom is now using Sensis Corp. technology to help monitor helicopter flights off the coast of Scotland.

The Sensis technology, known as the Wide Area Multilateration system, uses sensors to triangulate aircraft and helicopter locations based on transponder signals. The system provides air-traffic controllers with precise position and identification information, according to Sensis.

Citizens Financial Group, Inc. today announced it is adding ATMs under the Citizens Bank brand at nearly 500 Sunoco APlus convenience stores in 13 states, including 108 in New York.
Citizens plans to have the majority of the new machines installed in APlus convenience stores within Citizens' traditional retail footprint, including areas of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Annual treatment for people diagnosed with diabetes in upstate New York costs about $2.5 billion, according to a report from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

About 377,000 Upstate adults, or about one in 10, have been diagnosed with diabetes, a figure that's up by 81,000 compared to five years ago, the report says.
