NYSERDA awards funding for energy-storage projects

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today awarded funding to Cornell University and Binghamton University for energy-storage projects.
The funding is part of $8 million NYSERDA awarded for 19 projects around the state. The projects could have applications in transportation, smart grids, renewable energy, and other areas, according to NYSERDA.

St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Onondaga County, and the State University of New York Cortland (SUNY Cortland) are among several organizations awarded state funding for energy conservation projects.

The cities of Binghamton and Elmira and Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira also received funding.


Paterson says new law encourages businesses to produce renewable energy

Gov. David Paterson announced Tuesday the passage of a bill to improve net metering, which is meant to encourage businesses to develop their own renewable-energy systems.
Net metering allows electricity customers with qualified renewable-energy systems to sell excess electricity back to their local utility, according to the governor's office.

PSC OKs Griffiss renewable power plant

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) today approved up to $35 million in financing for a renewable power plant at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park (Griffiss Park) in Rome.

New nonprofit aims to spark growing firms

A new nonprofit group has launched to encourage the development and growth of more small, innovative companies in upstate New York.
The organization, Upstate Venture Connect, aims to increase connections among mentors, entrepreneurs, and those interested in working for young, growth-oriented firms. Group leaders also want to spark more collaboration among business groups, universities, and economic development organizations.
