Community Bank System, Inc. (NYSE: CBU) earned $16.2 million in the second quarter, up more than 76 percent from a year earlier.

Earnings per share in the period totaled 48 cents, up from 28 cents in the second quarter of 2009. Analysts were expecting earnings of 41 cents a share, according to Yahoo Finance.

Net income attributable to common shareholders at KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY) totaled $29 million in the second quarter, compared with a loss of $390 million a year earlier.
It's the first quarterly profit for the banking company since 2008.

Earnings per common share in the period totaled 3 cents, compared with a loss of 68 cents a share in the second quarter of 2009. Earnings per share from continuing operations in the period totaled 6 cents.

Net income available to shareholders at First Niagara Financial Group, Inc. totaled $20 million in the second quarter, up from $11.4 million a year earlier.

Earnings per share in the period totaled 10 cents, up from 8 cents a year ago. Operating income, which excludes nonrecurring items, was $44.9 million, up from $25.5 million in the second quarter of 2009.

M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE: MTB) earned $189 million in the second quarter, up from $51 million a year earlier.

Earnings per share totaled $1.46, up from 36 cents a share in the second quarter of 2009. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.01 per share, according to Reuters.

Tompkins Financial Corp. (AMEX: TMP) earned $9 million in the second quarter, up more than 21 percent from a year earlier.

Earnings per share totaled 83 cents in the period, up from 69 cents in the second quarter of 2009. Analysts were expecting earnings per share of 78 cents, according to Reuters.
